Solved my problem and it thankfully had nothing to do with Radiant. :-)
Turns out there was something nginx didn't like about that port. I
still haven't determined what exactly as running netstat -an showed
the port in use. Also strange because it worked for a year on that
port. But changing the port got around this problem.
