I haven't looked at the share_layouts extension but I think the main 
purpose is if you want to use Radiant only to pull the content. For 
example if you want to have a regular Rails app with the MVC model and 
in the View you want to pull both the content and the layout of the 
site. You don't have to use the Radiant Tags for this approach. So that 
Way you separated the Rails from Content.
