Just to point out, we already have typed parts. There, it didn't  
introduce any complexity.  :-)

My idea is, right now we've got a way to create something that uses  
the text string of the part and translates it to HTML. If that  
functionality, currently called a "filter", grew the ability to run  
its own admin pane, we could implement things like rich text editing  
and image management, with one added hook (or perhaps a related set  
of hooks).

Not exactly J2EE.
